The idea that we might have someone else pay for our children’s college educations may be initially tempting. However, after some contemplation of how lottery gambling fails to line up in any way with scripture, with sound economic policy, with healthy social relationships, or with responsible government the inescapable conclusion is that the lottery is a really bad idea. The ends never justify the means.
And no proposal, no matter how good it sounds, justifies poor public policy that would devastate lives, families, and communities while perverting the role of government.
Justice is a virtue we can all endorse and support. By voting against this state owned and operated lottery, you will be voting for Economic Justice.
The Bible is clear that Economic Justice, a concern for the well-being of the disadvantaged and poor, is to be a very important consideration as we make decisions and take action. Since lottery gambling imposes a predatory tax on the poor, our failure to oppose it is a lost opportunity to protect and prevent the exploitation of the disadvantaged and vulnerable.
“The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern.” Proverbs 29:7
By honestly evaluating the lottery proposal and the harm and injustice it would create...and by looking to the Scriptures to see what God says about our responsibilities as Christians...and by searching our own hearts...we can come to only one conclusion: this lottery proposal fails socially, civically, economically, and morally.
